MIDLAND WHIPPET CLUB August 2025 Championship Show

Judges Critique - Thomas Muench

It felt good to be back in the breed’s native country after an absence of (too) many years.

A heartfelt “Thank you” to the many helping hands in- and outside my ring who, together with some very lovely Whippets to go over, made for a totally enjoyable day of judging.

While I did not come across any widespread faults in my entry, there are areas I would like to address: “Meaty” lips and cheeks take away from the sleek look of a sighthound. Straight pasterns and upper arms as well as longer than necessary second thighs are not functional and the same is true for lack of depth of chest and/or spring of rib. And: Taller and longer isn’t always better.

Movement coming and going away was sounder than one tends to find elsewhere: There were only few who toed in or showed excessive action in front or rear. In profile, most covered the ground well and kept a typical outline on the move.

But above all: Fitness, muscular development and quality in general were excellent!

The CC and Reserve CC winners were outstandingly beautiful representatives of our breed and could certainly win anywhere.

Special Veteran Bitch (7-9) (10, 7)

1. Ch. Crosscop Let It Shine For Supeta: Beautiful and typical representative of the breed. She possesses a feminine head and is well made all through, keeps a typical outline standing and moving and has excellent depth of chest as well as matching angulation at both ends. Efficient mover. Best Veteran Bitch

2. Shirotae Solo Surprise: Slightly taller and rangier but feminine and really well developed. Standing or moving, she covers plenty of ground. Very nicely proportioned all through.

Special Veteran Bitch (10+) (6, 4)

1. Crosscop Brown Eyed Girl: Really fit looking and acting, feminine and functional bitch with a beautiful head and expression, lovely body proportions and sound legs and feet. She moved really well and kept a typical outline at all times.

2. Ringmore Day Lily: Most typical and graceful representative of the breed. Nicely proportioned all through. A little unsettled in front movement but covering the ground well.

Minor Puppy Bitch (7, 6)

1. Edenwhip Daydream Believer: Nicely made puppy but, naturally, still a little raw and square looking at this stage. She covered the ground well but needs to settle into her frame.

2. Penwincoed Wyn Winnie at Heroicghost: Smaller than the winner of this class, typically proportioned and showing promise; still unsettled on the move.

Puppy Bitch (8, 4)

1. Falconcrag On It: Brindle bitch of exquisite type and quality. Beautifully proportioned with lovely depth of chest and spring of rib. Standing or moving, she covers the ground really well and keeps a typical outline at all times. Best Puppy

2. Falconcrag On A Roll: Bitch of classic type and proportions. A little round in skull but feminine throughout. Beautifully developed body for age; efficient mover from all sides.

Junior Bitch (8, 4)

1. Crosscop Temptation To Supeta: Star of my entry. She shouts “quality”, is graceful and feminine but also fit and athletic as well as totally functional. She presents a typical outline standing still or moving with perfect timing and efficiency. Destined for even greater things to come. CC and BIS

2. Tervanty Dragonsong At Palmik: Exquisite fawn bitch of lovely quality. Really well proportioned, lovely head and expression and excellent body, legs and feet. She covered the ground effortlessly while keeping a typical outline.

Yearling Bitch (13, 11)

1. Saraquele Snow Over It: Beautiful and typical bitch of excellent quality. Feminine head and expression, correct set of neck, good top- and underline. Perhaps a touch straight in upper arm at this stage but otherwise typically angulated at both ends. Covers the ground really well on the move.

2. Ringmore Jocasta: Beautifully proportioned bitch of classic type and undoubted quality. Lovely feminine head and expression; excellent body, legs and feet. Unfortunately, still somewhat unsettled in front movement; good drive from behind.

Maiden Bitch (5, 3)

1. Penwincoed Betty Boop: exquisitely beautiful fawn and white bitch; lovely quality all through. Feminine head, really well made body, legs and feet. Typical movement from all angles. Loved her.

2. Cosmos Beloved Beauty: Still somewhat raw and inexperienced blue bitch with a typical outline when relaxed but, unfortunately, mostly rather tense and thus falling away a little too dramatically over her croup. Moved well.

Special Beginners Bitch (13, 13)

1. Penwincoed Kim Possible: Fawn bitch of beautiful and classical type; feminine and functional. Lovely head and expression; excellent body, legs and feet. Efficient mover from all angles.

2. Udalie Du Menuel Galopin (imp. FRA): Feminine brindle bitch; elegant, racy and really well muscled. Soundly constructed body, legs and feet; moved well.

Graduate Bitch (11, 9)

1. Lolani Tennessee Princess: Another classical fawn beauty; feminine but strong. Lovely head and expression, really well proportioned throughout. Moved with precision.

2.Wolfscastle Sky of Jules for Courtbirch: Attractive bitch, somewhat taller and longer than the winner of this class but nicely made all over; her front movement needs to steady up a little.

Mid Limit Bitch (8, 7)

1 Wolfscastle Be Juled: Attractive and soundly made brindle and white bitch. Caught the eye both standing and moving with a long, low and easy stride. Beautifully proportioned throughout.

Limit Bitch (14, 12)

1. Shalfleet Eastern Sonnet: Most attractive and feminine bitch, lovely proportions throughout. Gorgeous head and expression. Lovely top- and underline which she kept on the move. Moved out well in front but could have pushed a little harder from behind.

1. Dark Wing: Generously proportioned black dog. Masculine but elegant head, good neck, body, legs and feet; excellent return of upper arm. Moved really well.

2. Ringmore Dalrymple: Attractive fawn dog of correct size and proportions. Elegant but masculine head. Could use a touch more depth of chest but that did not take away from an otherwise lovely and typical outline.

Minor Puppy Dog (4, 3)

1. Edenwhip If I Can Dream: Still raw and rather leggy as one would expect at this stage. Masculine but elegant head; ear size and carriage were not his fortune on the day. Nicely developed chest for age. Sound legs and feet, co-ordinated mover from all angles.

2. Silkridge Figgy Pudding With Zeglynn: Overall very attractive young dog. Neck set could be a little smoother and his upper arm is a touch upright. Nicely developed body for age with excellent depth of chest and spring of rib. His symmetry of outline on the move was slightly spoilt by his tail carriage.

Puppy Dog (7, 5)

1. Cobyco Capture The Look At Redfoxia: Well made brindle dog of typical proportions. Good head and expression, lovely body for age; purposeful mover.

2. Whippiness Eyes Down: Blue and white dog; attractive but rather leggy at present, curvy outline. He needs to develop in body but moved really well in all directions.
